Job Summary Serves as the prime contact for technical expertise and skills to plan, design, set up, modify, optimize and monitor manufacturing processes. Works with other engineers and scientists ensuring product and system requirements are taken into account from product conception to final results. Provides technical support to production, purchasing material, and analytical service operations. Maintains safe and effective dally operations. Maintains and manages tactical day-to-day technical issues for areas and components or materials and resolves problems expeditiously. Liaison with research and development organizations to ensure Sandia is at forefront of ground-breaking research relative to the product.

Design engineer for non-production quantities of hazardous materials to ensure the development is complete and correct for integration into higher level component designs. Determines technical conditions under which tests are to be conducted, Including safety and security conditions. Develops project plans and carries out project management. Acts as Principle Investigator for projects focusing on manufacturing development requirements. Prepares test procedures, work planning, and control documents and maintains compliance. Coordinates operational, functional, and performance phases of tests. Prepares test and diagnostic programs and designs test fixtures and equipment. Plans the labor and scheduling for testing. Reviews and evaluates test requirements to ensure the completeness of the test program. Analyzes and Interprets test data. Documents as-tested parameters for future use, feedback, and improvement. Prepares technical reports for use by research and development and science and engineering staff. Designs new systems and processes for the introduction of new products or for the Improvement of existing processes. Interfaces with the customer to ensure customer expectations are met. Acts as a liaison between Sandia and vendor for external production - may include responsibility for providing vendor with specific process knowledge. Designs and plans layout for material and component processing operations or analytical services equipment and test activities. Plans sequences of operations and specifies procedures for safely preparing basic material or for complex assembly processes. Exercises judgment in compromising between conflicting requirements, costs of methods, and operator effectiveness and comfort. Plans the sequence or analytlcal services procedures to ensure that specified analyses are performed safely and produce high-confidence results. Works with design and product engineers to develop specifications for purchased materials and components. Monitors supplier quality performance and leads supplier quality improvement efforts. Ensures that processes are In control and analyzes failure mode effects. Establishes and submits processing requirements to be met in designing and acquiring processing equipment.

Job Specifications We are looking for an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to plan, develop and oversee production of engineering solutions for the next generation Mobile Guardian Transporter (MGT}. Qualified applicants will work on teams designing, analyzing, fabricating prototypes, testing and overseeing the production of component and system level hardware for the MGT currently under development. The selected applicant will have significant interactions with outside fabricators as well as oversee assembly of final products. The applicant will have opportunities to impact development of a critical national asset and experience complete product life cycle, from concept development to final product definition and production.

On any given day, the selected applicant may be called upon to:

• Lead or collaborate with teams of technologists on the· design and development of a variety of mechanical components or assemblies to meet defined requirements

• Participate in design peer reviews

• Ensure that selected designs meet criteria for manufacturability

• Based on inputs from the design team, work closely with and provide guidance to

Manufacturing Liaison and procurement to ensure that complex mechanical components are fabricated, on time, within budget and meet qualification requirements

• Scheduling or directing the work of technologists to ensure that fabricated components are assembled in the manner designed

• With minimum input from engineering project leads, and making independent decisions, ensure the fabrication and assembly of prototype designs in the most efficient manner

• Oversee the integration of assembled electrical or electromechanical prototypes into mechanical structures and systems

The Mechanical Systems and Design Department is responsible for mechanical design of the MGT and for sustaining all technical aspects of the SGT (SafeGuards Transporter) fleet. Both the MGT and the SGT projects are high-visibility, multi-year efforts which go from concept development to fielded product in support of national security missions. Our engineers have access to the latest CAD and ASC (Advanced Simulation and Computing) tools for developing and analyzing their designs. They also have the opportunity to participate in extensive field tests up through full scale models. Our technologists can perform detailed design definition and are experienced with fabrication of mechanical components. We have the capabilities to prototype, assemble and instrument scaled models as well as full scale components and systems in our well-equipped high-bay lab space. Our team routinely uses 3D printers and 3D lasers scanners in their work.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability

Understanding of good manufacturlng practices and competency with all manufacturing support systems and procedures. Knowledge of engineering systems and calculations and experience applying engineering methods and technology-aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.

Knowledge of safety engineering and work planning and control methods. Knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies. Knowledge of relevant Sandia National Laboratories procedures, standards, and guides. Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or U.S. Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline. Knowledge of engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices. Knowledge of project and process engineering practices. Experience with project planning and project management. Ability to work closely with customers, suppliers, and external vendors to define requirements and mutual responsibilities.

Skilled in supervising junior staff and vendors in manufacturing operations, using good communication to avoid errors in schedule and product requirements. Ability to establish and manage a rapid prototype capability. Ablllty to think analytically and creatively as a design engineer. Ability to work on Individual Initiatives and act as a contributing team member.

Minimum Qualifications (Required) 1. Associates degree in mechanical design technology or a closely related engineering field or equivalent experience;

  1. Experience In manufacturing and overseeing the production of complex mechanical components and systems;

  2. Experience in placing, managing and interfacing with fabricators;

  3. Demonstrated experience leading diverse teams;

S. Fluency in CAD systems (CREO, preferred, or SolidWorks);

  1. Experience on mechanical engineering design, qualification, production, or modeling/simulation projects;

  2. Active DOE Q-level security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired) 1. BS in mechanical engineering, production engineering or related disciplines;

  1. Experience with electrical cabling interconnecting electronic modules

  2. Experience designing for manufacturability;

  3. Experience working with manufacturing liaison to get parts fabricated

  4. Knowledgeable about advanced welding processes and methodologies;

  5. Knowledgeable about sheet metal design and fabrication processes;

  6. Experience in automotive engineering;

  7. Experience In heavy equipment operations and maintenance;

  8. Experience with additive manufacturing techniques and processes.
