Automation Engineer




This position provides automation engineering discipline support for various projects by researching, specifying, developing, designing, engineering, or testing components, equipment and/or systems.

Essential Duties:

Develops automation design standards for the client and is able to use existing client standards.

Designs automation systems for plant expansions, including the development of field and control room instrumentation specifications.

Develops applications of controls, instruments and associated systems for commercial, petrochemical and industrial uses.

Interfaces with other discipline engineers to determine instrumentation specifications.

Coordinates the configuration of digital control systems (DCS) installations.

Evaluates new technologies to improve existing systems and resolve process and safety problems.

Designs and implements online analyzers by determining the plant requirements, developing specifications, installing the analyzers, and evaluating the impact.

Develops and implements expert systems software by writing programs to run on DCS.

Identifies systems, which could be improved through designs, and implements those designs based on current technologies.

Provides input to project P& ID’s.

Researches and analyzes data such as client design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.

Works with clients to develop a project’s scope of work, estimates, and/or schedules.

Reviews and approves project drawings, standards and specifications.

Develops major equipment and material selection, and construction specifications.

Ensures that all assigned activities and operations comply with applicable codes, regulations and laws.

Provides support during fabrication and installation phases to ensure engineering documents are followed.

Coordinates activities with other project disciplines involved in fabrication, operation, application, and installation or repair of various materials, products or systems.

Provides technical direction, support and information to other engineers, designers and drafters.

Consistently demonstrates professional skills in structuring assigned activities, creativity, teamwork, communications, operational efficiencies, handling of a client’s changing needs, decision making, and analyzing and solving problems.

Provides project support to include:

Provide on-site construction technical support.

Provide material procurement support.

Track discipline utilization rates against real earned progress and report regularly.

Produce design and material modifications to support schedule or other changes while coordinating with project engineers and owners.

Support critical project milestones (sea-lifts, ice-roads, ship dates,long lead times, etc) and track critical path elements within the Instrument engineering and design Scope Of Work that impact these milestones.

Work closely with Instrument and Control designers.

Other duties as assigned.

Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Petroleum or Industrial Engineering from an accredited institution.

Minimum one (1) year directly related experience.

Previous experience in the Oil & Gas industry.

Arctic Engineering class taken and passed preferred.

EIT certification preferred.

North Slope Alaska, Alaska, Arctic, Canadian, Cold Regions, Offshore Structures, Petroleum Industry, and/or project experience is preferred but not required.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management and client.

Mathematical Skills:

Comprehend and apply principles of calculus, modern algebra and statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations and proofs and theorems. Ability to apply mathematical operations to work projects.

Reasoning Ability:

Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with non-verbal symbols (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in the most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Word word processing software; Excel spreadsheet software; Outlook e-mail software; and any other discipline-specific design or analysis software, as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and work in high, precarious places while working in the field.The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, although fieldwork is sometimes moderately noisy.

Must be willing to travel overnight (or longer) to remote work locations.
