Job Introduction Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

This position is supporting the National Ignition Facility (NIF) which is the world’s largest and most energetic laser facility ever built. NIF is also the most precise and reproducible laser as well as the largest optical instrument. The giant laser has nearly 40,000 optics, which precisely guide, reflect, amplify, and focus 192 laser beams onto a fusion target about the size of a pencil eraser.

We have an opening for a Mechanical Engineering Technician. The successful candidate will provide design, evaluation, review, metrology, oversight, testing, assembly, quality policy implementation, and documentation of various projects associated with diffractive optics in support of the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate. You will provide lead direction, establish scope of work, develop and implement advanced technical support in the design of experimental, research, and prototype equipment and components associated with mechanical/electronic components and systems. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

Due to the vast and varying types of experiments, NIF is a 24/7 operational facility. This position may require the successful candidate to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. This position may also require working alternate schedules such as 4/10’s or 12 hour shifts. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Job Description

Essential Duties

  • Design, fabricate, troubleshoot, assemble, and disassemble complex electro-mechanical components and systems; including planning and selecting materials, equipment, and methods.

  • Provide general Mechanical or Electro-Mechanical drafting and design support to lead designers, engineering, scientific, and technical staff utilizing knowledge of CAD tools.

  • Process drawings and other technical information using database management software.

  • Perform basic calculations to support technical work using standard engineering formulas.

  • Maintain systems documentation and experimental records.

  • Develop, document, and qualify inspection and test methods procedures.

  • Analyze design, process, and test development problems.

  • Ability to read and follow complex assembly procedures, engineering notes, sketches, and drawings.

  • Operate custom tooling for optics processing at meter aperture

  • Effective written, verbal, feedback and presentation communication skills.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's (BS) degree in mechanical or electronics technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical or engineering field.

  • Knowledge of engineering standards and policies, including design safety standards, planning and design, and experience in both 2D & 3D CAD programs.

  • Knowledge of hardware design, fabrication, or metrology processes.

  • Experience participating in engineering testing operations, analyzing results, writing reports, and creating presentations.

  • Experience with vacuum systems and components

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of materials, equipment, or technologies associated with high precision manufacturing and metrology.

  • QA/QC documentation skills used in an engineering environment.

Special Requirements

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.
