Our ideal candidate would perform the following on a PART-TIME basis.

Build citations using the Publications Manager software for new publications.

Using USGS-provided interfaces and supporting bibliographic information, the candidate is responsible for formatting and populating citation data and publishing complete records to the database. The candidate shall adhere to the USGS Publications Warehouse Manual to create appropriate metadata, and study area geotags. The candidate shall work cooperatively with the Publications Warehouse team members to identify any areas where additional research or trouble-shooting is needed to correctly create records.

Perform verification checks on newly created records.

The candidate shall check all new metadata records modified in the last day and report errors to the PubsWarehouse team members. The candidate shall ensure that the Pubs homepage (and the USGS publications page) are up to date and accurate. Using their knowledge from Task 1, the candidate shall correct all cataloging errors and will confirm with USGS staff that all non-standard entries have been corrected and updated.

Respond to reference questions

Using a variety of resources including bibliographic databases, library catalogs, the internal USGS IPDS system, and the USGS Remedy system, the candidate shall triage all queries each day and refer to the USGS Publications Warehouse manual to find stock answers that may fit the situation. The candidate shall create documentation for new categories of reference responses and insert them into the USGS Confluence website. All non-standard questions will be reported to the PubsWarehouse team for final resolution.

Compose tweets for Pubs Warehouse (USGS Pubs)

The candidate shall tweet for PubsWarehouse throughout each day only after each tweet is approved by the Publications Warehouse manager or an alternate. Twitter entries shall be recorded on the Confluence site to prevent redundancy. Tweetdeck shall be utilized to schedule tweets throughout an entire week.

Build citations for historic scans

The candidate is responsible for formatting and populating citation data and publishing complete records to the database. The candidate shall adhere to the documentation titled Cataloging Scanned Publications Instructions to create appropriate metadata, and study area geotags. The candidate shall work cooperatively with the Publications Warehouse team members to identify any areas where additional research or trouble-shooting is needed to correctly create records.

Geotag publications and information products

The candidate shall populate the database with geospatial information with geographic tags such as country, city, state, and other geospatial terminology as well as utilize geographic extents to ensure that the study area of the publication can be displayed on a map. Using their knowledge from Task 1, the candidate shall insert geospatial information into the record and will cooperatively with the Publications Warehouse team members to correctly tag all study areas in the most exact position as possible.

Physical Demands/Travel

  • The work is sedentary. Some standing, walking, bending, and occasionally carrying light items such as papers and books are required.

  • No Travel Required

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience reading, understanding, and editing data tables to create metadata records Experience working with data tables in collaboration with IPDS

  • Experience with USGS Remedy System

  • Experience with PubsWarehouse

  • Familiarity with the USGS IPDS system required

  • 1-2 years’ experience in managing data and metadata required

  • High School Diploma required
