NANA Regional Corporation Remote Safety Manager - Prudhoe Bay in North Slope/Prudhoe Bay, Alaska

Job Description

The Remote Safety Manager establishes and promotes the maintenance of a safe, accident free, and healthy work environment. This position will primarily be focused on Remote Site Safety support but will also support other aspects of NMS business.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts studies and job safety analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards to health, safety, and environment for use by company personnel and outside agencies.

  • Performs IH monitoring tasks including air sampling and sound level surveys.

  • Provide field support to remote as well as in-town company organizations.

  • Generally, handles an assigned area such as a portion of the North Slope, Red Dog, or some other similar area.

  • Duties may also include some assigned routine work in various Alaskan communities.

  • Functions as department head of North Slope Safety Department.

  • Coordinates and leads all North Slope incident and accident investigations, case management of injured employees and final reporting.

  • Supervises safety specialist and safety advisors assigned to operating units.

  • Conducts camp safety, hygiene, and fire code compliance inspections.

  • Conducts internal audits on Environmental Management System.

  • Performs job safety training assessments and develops training modules in accordance with gap analysis.

  • Implements established safety policies and procedures. Formulates general safety policies and procedures to be followed through NMS that comply with local, state, and federal safety regulations.

  • Consults with managers and supervisors regarding the design and use of equipment, shops, fire-prevention, and safety programs.

  • Assists managers and supervisors in developing and implementing local safety related systems and procedures.

  • Assists managers with task observation systems.

  • Inspects or tours organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, unsafe behaviors, recommends corrective or preventative measures where indicated.

  • Takes the role as subject matter expert for code compliance on all safety, health and environmental issues arising within the assigned operating units.

  • Coordinates with NMS Vice President HSSE for directions on all Health, Safety, Security and Environmental programs initiated within assigned operating units to ensure conformity with corporate initiatives.

  • Keeps managers and employees alerted as to the hazards of working with toxic fumes, dangerous chemicals, or any other hazardous substances.

  • Acts as single point of contact for approval of all new chemicals being introduced into the operating units.

  • Participates in and assists supervisors in the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.

  • Devises, supervises, coordinates, and delivers various safety training classes, programs, or media.

  • Assists supervisors with safety meetings and with PPE hazard assessments.

  • Conducts various safety classes on a wide variety of topics throughout the State of Alaska and NMS.

  • Prepares and arranges safety exhibits and material for display, promotional work, industry conferences and exhibitions.

  • Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs. Represents NMS on a variety of safety issues with regulatory agencies.

  • Oversees Maintenance of safety files and records.

  • Assists NMS Workers Compensation Manager and NMS HSSE Vice President in determining OSHA 300 status of incidents.

  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Sciences in any of the following areas: industrial hygiene, safety engineering, and/or business management. An AA degree from a technical training school directly in a safety field and at least four (4) years of experience may be substituted for the four-year degree.

  • At least two (2) years directly related industrial safety experience involving multiple disciplines (maintenance, construction, shop operations, transportation, security etc.).

  • One or more of these certificates: Occupational Safety and Health Technician, Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Registered Sanitarian.

  • A working knowledge of CFR 29, 49 & 58, AKOSH regulations, HACCP, and basic industrial hygiene techniques and principles. Qualified HAZWOPER instructor status desirable.

  • A food service sanitation instructor or certification must be received within six months from hire date.

  • Must have intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Word / Excel / PowerPoint / Outlook and other similar common software programs. (candidates will be tested on competency level).

  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS’ vehicle insurance policy.

  • Must pass all pre-employment contract requirements which may include but are not limited to: drug test, physical and fit for duty assessment and hearing test. Applicants not located near a testing facility are responsible for paying for travel to the nearest testing facility.

  • Must be able to cooperate and work as part of a team with fellow employees, customers and clients.

  • Must be able to make decisions in the moment with little to no supervision.

  • Must be able to be on your feet for 12 hours per shift for the scheduled rotation.

  • Must be able to live in dormitory style settings and meet cleanliness requirements of the remote camp.

  • Contract requires employees to speak, understand, read and write English.

  • Must meet and adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set forth by the company and client.

CANDIDATES RESIDING OUTSIDE ANCHORAGE AREA:

Candidates residing in Alaska & the Lower 48 for any contract: For the purposes of pre-employment testing, Anchorage will be considered the point of hire (with the exception of drug testing, which will be conducted near the candidate’s place of residence). Employee is responsible for any travel expenses and needed accommodations related to pre−employment tasks that need to be completed in Anchorage, AK. This includes, but is not limited to, any safety training requirements, required pre−employment testing and/or training such as physical, DOT physical/medical card, fit for duty, audiogram, and/or other testing required by contract/company (NSTC, APICC training, security licensing requirements, etc.).

Candidates residing in Alaska for Alyeska Contract: pre-employment testing will be scheduled near the candidate’s area of residence within the state. The only exception is when the candidate lives in a region without the necessary service providers to complete all requirements.

Flights to Remote Locations: All employees are responsible for all expenses related to reporting to point of hire (Anchorage, AK) for scheduled trips paid for by the company for remote locations.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoor/Outdoor. Frequently exposed to arctic conditions.

Noise level: Moderate to Loud

Description of environment: This is a remote camp setting. Employees must constantly be able to stand, walk, climb, push, pull use hands and arms, stoop, kneel and crouch. Employees are occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

Travel: Must be able to travel by plane and/or bus to remote camps.

Physical requirements: Fit For Duty Test

  • Lift: Lift 25 lbs. from floor to knuckle x 2,

  • Lift: Lift 10 lbs. from floor to waist x 2,

  • Carry: Carry 25 lbs. with two hands for a minimum distance of 50 feet,

  • Squat Test: Functionally squat x 5, self-paced but continuous,

  • Kneel: Kneel on one knee and stand. Return to kneel on opposite knee. Repeat alternate kneeling sequence x 5 for each knee, self-paced but continuous.

  • Stairs: Climb up and down 12 steps x 9 for a total of 108 steps, self-paced.

  • Allow a 30 second rest period after completing 54 step.

  • Stairs and Carry: Climb up and down 12 steps x 2 for a total of 24 steps while carrying 25 lbs. in one hand and using the other hand to grasp a railing for safety, self-paced.

  • Allow a 30 second rest period after completing climbing up and down 12 step.,

  • Slanted Ladder: Climb a slanted ladder with 6 rungs x 2 repetitions for a total of 12 rungs, self-paced but continuous.
