The Social Media Analyst will independently provide services to support the mission of the Office of Analysis, Planning, Programming, and Learning (APPL), Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations (CSO), U.S. Department of State with a focus on supporting CSO’s Global Horizon Center as part of CSO’s Advanced Analytics (AA) team.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop approaches to analyze and utilize social media data for early warning, network analysis, and forecasting.

  • Support the development of new and continuing social media analytics tools, and other emerging technology as needed, for early warning and conflict prediction in the GHC

  • Support the deployment and management of CSO’s Global Horizon Center (GHC) to include content curation and systems administration

  • Work with APPL teams, regional teams, PSC, and EX-IT in developing interactive dashboards and other creative data visualization for priority CSO analysis products for inclusion in the GHC.

  • Working with AA team members to develop for the GHC integrated, automated databases to pull conflict, economic, and political science datasets together.

  • Match datasets by location names, country names, and other identifiers.

  • Continually curate and update relevant datasets to maximize efficiency of analytics and content development.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong background in social media analytics.

  • Familiarity with social network analysis a plus.

  • Demonstrated expertise in common data visualization tools to include interactive dashboards and other creative solutions, such as Insights for ArcGIS and Tableau

  • Strong knowledge of and experience with data management and databases (SQL etc), and familiarity with basic programming/scripting (Python, XML, Javascript, etc)

  • Familiarity with web and graphic design using software such as Adobe Creative Cloud.

  • Strong background in database design and management.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Must be able to obtain and Maintain a Secret clearance

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher and 3 years’ experience.

  • Preference for candidates with a background in conflict, geography, statistics, cartography, data analytics, or data visualization.

  • Familiarity with social media analytics a plus.
